How to choose a cheerleading coach

In my last post, I said that sometimes a cheer coach can unwittingly cause mental blocks.  This can be due to the pressure to win and/or the lack of experience on the part of the coach.

So how can you know if a coach is the right one?  Here are some things to look for.

First and foremost is safety.  All coaches should have completed a safety course and hold a certificate from an organization such as American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators (AACCA).

Additionally, they should be trained in first aid and CPR.  Also ask if coach is trained in proper methods for spotting and then ask for examples. Ask what plans are in place in the event of an emergency. Do not be shy in asking about this!

Second is the skill level and expertise of the coach. Has he or she been trained in gymnastics and partner stunting?  When and how? Find out how the coach plans to teach skills.  Does the coach use a qualification system so that cheerleaders demonstrate mastery of stunts and skills?  Does the coach know about and use skills progression training?

Ask the coach to give a step-by-step example of how he or she teaches tumbling skills and stunting.  Also, find out what a coach will do if an athlete expresses fear.  A good coach will be able to answer this in a thoughtful, empathic way.

It can be useful to also ask if any of the cheerleaders currently on the squad have mental blocks and if so, how has the coach handled this.   It can be helpful to also ask how coach manages conflict on the team.  How is discipline handled?  Some coaches are yellers and screamers.  Is that what you want?

Finally, talk to other parents and cheerleaders to find out how satisfied they are with the coach and the program. Ask detailed questions.  If you are satisfied with what you hear, this may be the coach for you!
